Jets’ Winters out; Williams out of concussion protocol

New York Jets right guard Brian Winters will not play against the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday because of an abdominal injury.

Coach Todd Bowles said Friday that either Dakota Dozier or Brent Qvale will replace Winters.

Defensive end Leonard Williams completed the NFL’s concussion protocol after being injured last Sunday at New Orleans and was a full participant at practice.

Running backs Matt Forte (knee) and Elijah McGuire (illness) are questionable, as is center Wesley Johnson (hip). Neither Forte nor McGuire practiced all week, so Bilal Powell could see increased carries against the Chargers.

Johnson was limited Thursday and Friday, and Bowles said Dozier or Jonotthan Harrison would replace Johnson if he can’t play.

Tour director wants quick investigation

Tour de France director Christian Prudhomme wants cycling authorities to act quickly in their investigation of four-time champion Chris Froome.

Froome has been ordered to explain to the International Cycling Union why a urine sample he provided at the Spanish Vuelta in September showed a concentration of the asthma drug salbutamol that was twice the permitted level.

“We want the situation to be cleared up, to get out of the darkness and ambiguity,” Prudhomme told France Info TV on Friday. “We obviously want an investigation to be conducted, and we don’t want it to last for months and months, so we can have an answer from the UCI as soon as possible next season.”

If found guilty of doping, the 32-year-old Froome could lose his Vuelta title and be suspended for a long period.

Omar Minaya returning to Mets as Asst. GM

Omar Minaya is returning to the New York Mets as a special assistant to Sandy Alderson, who replaced him as general manager after the 2010 season.

Minaya was the Mets’ senior assistant GM from September 1997 until February 2002, when he joined the Montreal Expos as major league baseball’s first Hispanic GM. He returned to the Mets as GM after the 2004 season, helped put together a roster that reached Game 7 of the NL Championship Series in 2006, then was fired after consecutive seasons with losing records.

He was San Diego’s senior vice president of baseball operations from December 2011 until January 2015, and since then has been senior adviser to players’ association head Tony Clark.

Now 59, Minaya worked in scouting for Texas from 1985-87.
