'Until something changes our mind, we're looking at it as a homicide,' said police Capt. Daniel DeWolf.

Police said four people were found dead and may have been killed in an apartment in the capital region.

Police spokesman Capt. Daniel DeWolf told The Troy Record that detectives and evidence technicians were called to 158 Second Ave. around 12:50 p.m. Tuesday, after the bodies were discovered by the building’s property manager.

“A property manager was checking on the basement apartment here, and he found four unresponsive individuals inside, so the officers arrived on scene, as well as the Troy Fire Department medics, and we went in and found four deceased people,” DeWolf said at the scene Tuesday afternoon.

The deaths are “certainly suspicious,” he added. “Until something changes our mind, we’re looking at it as a homicide.”

“It’s horrible. Terrible. Sad — sad especially at this time of year,” DeWolf said. “We’re going to do everything we can to look into this and get to the bottom of what happened here.”

Police had a section of Second Avenue closed to traffic Tuesday afternoon as they investigated. Also at the crime scene briefly was Rensselaer County District Attorney Joel Abelove.

DeWolf said the department was not ready to release any identifying information, such as names, ages or genders on any of the victims.

“We’re currently on scene here with the detective bureau, some crime scene investigators, and the state police are also going to assist us with some technical things that we need,” he said. “It’s definitely suspicious, [and] we’re investigating it as a multiple homicide.”

DeWolf was not able to provide any additional details about the investigation.

A phone call to one of the home’s apartments was answered by someone who declined to comment.
