Screening of Leon Russell documentary on Jan. 17
WHAT: Screening of documentary on Leon Russell WHEN: Jan. 17 at 7:15 p.m. WHERE: Rosendale Theatre, 408 Main St., Rosendale DETAILS: The theatre will screen the documentary “A Poem Is a Naked Person,” which examines the career of rocker Leon Russell. As a pianist, Russell played on albums by the Beach Boys and Jan and Dean. He also produced and played in recording sessions for Bob Dylan, Frank Sinatra, Ike & Tina Turner, and the Rolling Stones. When he went solo, Russell recorded his first album in 1970 with legends Eric Clapton, Ringo Starr and George Harrison. In 1972, Russell commissioned filmmaker Les Blank to make a documentary about him. Blank kept his camera rolling over the course of two years, ending up with nearly 60 hours of 16 mm footage, resulting in the documentary, which runs 90 minutes. Admission is $8, $6 for members. Hudson Valley Folk Guild event Jan. 20 in Poughkeepsie
WHAT: Hudson Valley Folk Guild event WHEN: Jan. 20 at 7:30 p.m. WHERE: Unitarian Fellowship, 67 S. Randolph Ave., Poughkeepsie DETAILS: The Hudson Valley Folk Guild’s Poughkeepsie chapter continues its 2017-2018 coffeehouse series, with Kevin and Carol Becker, joined by Rich Keyes, as the featured act. Performing together regularly for over 20 years, the trio have developed a unique sound that combines breathtaking vocals, instrumental dexterity and a synergy that comes only from an intimate knowledge of each other’s talents. The coffeehouse performances start with an open mic format, followed by the featured act. Admission is $6, $5 for folk guild members.
