Katherine (Scimeca) Gualtieri, 96, of Ulster Park

ULSTER PARK » Katherine (Scimeca) Gualtieri, 96, former longtime resident of Broadway, Ulster Park, died Tuesday, Dec. 26, 2017, at Ten Broeck Commons.

Katherine was born in Highland, N.Y., on Sept. 14, 1921; a daughter of the late Salvatore and Josephine ( Realmuto) Scimeca.

On Nov. 22, 1953 she married James Gualtieri, who died in 1989. She was a devoted, loving mother, grandmothe­r, and greatgrand­mother. She was always there to attend grandchild­ren’s ballgames to cheer them on. She attended their school activities and drove them here and there. She grew into being an avid NY Yankee fan. Her fondest past times were growing and selling her prized homegrown tomatoes and nurturing her rose garden.

She is survived by one son: Jim Gualtieri, and his wife Gina, of Port Ewen; Fran Tiano, and her husband, Marco, of Ulster Park; two brothers, Peter Scimeca of Clintondal­e, and Salvatore Scimeca, Jr., of New Paltz; three grandchild­ren: Jimmy Gualtieri and his wife Diane, of Kingston, Krystina Gualtieri of Albany, and Marisa Tiano-Doland and her husband Russell, of Ulster Park; and one greatgrand­son, James Richard Gualtieri. Many nieces and nephews also survive.

She is predecease­d by sisters, Dorothy Anderson, Minnie Ligotino, and Rose Walker, and one brother, Dominick Scimeca.

The service will be held 6:30 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 29, 2017, at the GilpatricV­anVliet Funeral Home, 339 Broadway, Ulster Park, the Rev. Bubel will officiate.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home prior to the service on Friday, from 4 to 6:30 p.m.

Cremation will be held at Wiltwyck Crematory. Inurnment in the family plot in the spring at St. Mary’s Cemetery will be private at the discretion of the family.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests indoor plants for loved ones to take home and nurture in memory of Katherine, or a contributi­on in her memory to either: Ten Broeck Activities Fund, One Commons Drive, Lake Katrine, N.Y., 12449, or American Cancer Society, 121 Executive Drive, Suite 200, New Windsor, N.Y., 12553.

The family would like to thank the staff of the Esopus Unit at Ten Broeck Commons for the compassion­ate and wonderful care provided to Katherine.
