Kingston girls coach earns 400th victory
Longtime girls coach Steve Garner records 400th victory as Tigers slip past Pine Bush
Lanasia Dorsey’s foul shot with 17 seconds left gave Kingston girls basketball coach Steve Garner his 400th career victory Friday night as the Tigers edged Pine Bush 40-39 in an Orange County Interscholastic Athletic Association Division I contest.
“It’s an accomplishment,” said Garner, in his 31st season at the helm. Garner is 400-231 with the Tigers, who are nearing a 16th consecutive winning season. The Team is now 7-3 heading into Wednesday’s game at Newburgh. “We got bigger fish to fry.”
Part of that is addressing offensive struggles that have resurfaced after last week’s 88-point outing against Roosevelt.
“We were really stuggling with our shooting tonight,” Garner noted. “There was a long time between hoops.”
Pine Bush jumped out to a 9-0 lead to start, but Kingston regrouped to pull within 19-16 at halftime. The Tigers pulled ahead
in the third quarter.
“We were up seven with four minutes left when I pulled the plug and have them run clock,” Garner said. “That was stupid.”
Pine Bush, behind Antonia
Adipietro (23 points), rallied to go ahead by one with 40 seconds remaining. Nicole Spinelli buried a big 3-point field goal to put Kingston back up, but the Lady Bushmen tied with 27 seconds to play.
Dorsey was fouled with 17 seconds left, missed the first shot, but sank the second to give the Tigers the
40-39 lead.
Pine Bush missed a game-winning shot attempt with one second left on the clock.
Spinelli scored 16 points and Dorsey had nine to pace Kingston. Jaid Harrell (seven points) and Chloe Chaffin (four) had quiet offensive nights, but made up with their defense and rebounding.
