Second Uptown water main break repaired

City work crews competed a 2nd water main repair late Friday at Lucas and Dunneman avenues in Kingston.

City work crews competed a water main repair late Friday night at Lucas and Dunneman avenues in Uptown Kingston about four feet away from the spot where a previous break was repaired a week earlier, city Water Superintendent Judith Hansen said.

Hansen first thought a repair clamp that had been placed on a pipe during a Jan. 6 fix at that location had “let loose” at about 6:45 p.m. Friday causing a second water main break in the same spot.

But, when reached Saturday morning, Hansen said Friday night’s break was actually separate from the original repair. She said the second repair was made easier by the previous break because excavation work had already been done at the same spot.

Hansen speculated that the previous repair may have weakened the pipe, leading to Friday night’s leak.

The outage affected several hundred customers in the neighborhood surrounding Edson Elementary School, including Lucas Avenue, the Fairview Gardens Apartments, and Merilina and Alcazar avenues.

The previous break happened Jan. 6 and crews worked through the afternoon of Jan. 7 making repairs.

On Jan. 2., city Water Department crews had to repair another water main break on Lucas Avenue between Emerson Street and Plymouth Avenue, but no customers lost service as a result of that break.
