Martin Luther King Jr. Service on Jan. 15

The 50th annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Service will take place Monday, Jan. 15, at 6 p.m. at the Cathedral at the House of Refuge Internatio­nal Ministries, 131 Broadway.

The guest speaker will be the Rev. Ronald Grant of the Shiloh Baptist Church in Hudson and president of the Empire Baptist Convention of New York.

Admission is free, and all are welcome.

On Sunday, Jan. 14, at 4 p.m., the Christian Ministeria­l Fellowship will host several student and community musical performanc­es and a meal in honor of King at the Cathedral at the House of Refuge Internatio­nal Ministries. The West Point Gospel Choir will be among those performing.

Admission for the show and meal is $10.

Movies With Spirit will show ‘Lion’ on Jan. 20

The uplifting biographic­al drama “Lion,” based on the true story of an adopted Indian orphan who later makes an epic search for his original family and home, will be screened as part of the monthly Movies With Spirit series on Saturday, Jan. 20, at 7 p.m. at New Progressiv­e Baptist Church, 8 Hone St.

The multi-award-winning film follows Saroo Brierley (played by Sunny Pawar), a 5-year-old boy who lives with his older brother, younger sister and mother in impoverish­ed rural India in the mid-1980s. One day, while traveling with his brother Guddu (Abhishek Bharate), Saroo boards a passenger train, thinking incorrectl­y that Guddu is aboard. While waiting for
