Daniel Tande wins 1st title at ski flying Worlds

Daniel Andre Tande of Norway claimed his first big internatio­nal title at the ski flying World Championsh­ips on Saturday.

The 23-year-old Tande, who had already won the opening two rounds with jumps of 212 and 227 meters, did enough for overall victory with a jump of 200 in the third round for 651.9 points.

The fourth round was called off due to strong winds and heavy snowfall.

Tande also set a new hill record in Oberstdorf by jumping 238.5 in qualificat­ion.

The Norwegian finished 13.3 points ahead of Poland’s Kamil Stoch, the Four Hills champion, who had jumps of 230, 219 and 211.5 meters.

Germany’s Richard Freitag was third with jumps of 228, 225 and 190.5 for 627.6 points, ahead of Stefan Kraft of Austria and Andreas Stjernen of Norway.

Austrian rider Walkner wins Dakar Rally

Matthias Walkner has won his first title at the Dakar Rally in the motorcycle category.

The 2017 runner-up finished the last stage of the race on Saturday in eighth place, securing the title more than 16 minutes ahead of Argentina’s Kevin Benavides of Honda.

The win for the 31-year-old Austrian gives KTM its 17th straight Dakar title.

Benavides was the winner at the end of the 120-kilometer (74mile) stage in Cordoba, Argentina.

Defending champion Sam Sunderland of KTM was forced to abandon in the first stages of the race in Peru. The British rider crashed in desert while leading the race.

Frenchman Adrien van Beveren of Yamaha, who was also leading, was forced out three days ago.

Tressel to be Michigan State football’s DC

Michigan State has announced that Mike Tressel will be the team’s defensive coordinato­r after Harlon Barnett’s departure to Florida State .

Tressel had been a co-defensive coordinato­r for the Spartans with Barnett. Michigan State also announced Friday that former Kent State coach Paul Haynes has been hired as the Spartans’ secondary coach.

Tressel, the nephew of former Ohio State coach Jim Tressel, has been on the staff for Mark Dantonio’s whole 11-year tenure as Michigan State’s coach.

Haynes was fired in November after five seasons as Kent State’s coach. He coached defensive backs at Michigan State in 2003 and 2004 before spending seven seasons on the defensive staff at Ohio State.
