Brewers, Lorenzo Cain agree to 5-year deal

A person familiar with the negotiations says the Milwaukee Brewers and freeagent outfielder Lorenzo Cain have agreed to a five-year, $80 million deal.

The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the agreement has not been announced.

Cain is a former Brewers farmhand who will join Christian Yelich as part of a dramatic outfield makeover for a team hoping to dethrone the Chicago Cubs in the NL Central.

The 31-year old Cain spent the past seven seasons in Kansas City, where he was part of the Royals’ core that won the World Series in 2015.

Cain was drafted by the Brewers in the 17th round before being traded to Kansas City as part of a deal that sent Zack Greinke to Milwaukee before the 2011 season.

Rocky statue Super Bowl bet is on

Philadelphia’s iconic Rocky statue could be forced to sport New England Patriots colors thanks to a Super Bowl wager with the Massachusetts hometown of heavyweight champ Rocky Marciano.

Brockton Mayor Bill Carpenter said Thursday that Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney had agreed to the Rocky vs. Rocky bet.

If Philadelphia wins the big game, Brockton’s statue of the undefeated Marciano will be clad in Eagles gear. If New England wins, Philadelphia’s Rocky will wear Patriots attire.

In a video posted on Carpenter’s Facebook page, Kenney says he can’t promise a Patriots jersey would last long in Philadelphia. He joked that the city might have to grease the statue to prevent fans from scaling it to remove the gear.

Racist chants at Iowa basketball game

Authorities say some student spectators at a predominantly white school in northwest Iowa greeted a visiting rival boys’ basketball team with racist chants.

The chants and slogans at the Jan. 19 game at Spencer High School included some fans yelling that the Storm Lake players should “go back where you came from.” Other students chanted, “USA.”

The school superintendents say the Storm Lake district has 2,400 students, and 84 percent are non-Caucasian. The Spencer district has 1,900 students and is predominantly white.

Spencer Superintendent Terry Hemann told The Des Moines Register that administrators have disciplined the Spencer students involved, but he declined to provide details.

A similar situation occurred during a football game last October between the rival schools.
