Angels sign veterans Chris Carter, Chris Young

The Los Angeles Angels have signed veteran slugger Chris Carter and longtime outfielder Chris Young.

Carter got a minor league deal with an invitation to spring training on Sunday, while Young agreed to a one-year contract.

Carter played for the New York Yankees last season, batting .201 with eight homers. The first baseman is only one season removed from leading the NL with 41 homers for Milwaukee in 2016.

The 31-year-old Carter has 158 career homers, including three straight seasons with at least 24 homers for Houston.

Young spent last season with Boston, batting .235 with 25 RBIs in 90 games. He also has played for Arizona, Oakland and the Mets and Yankees.

The Angels traded first baseman C.J. Cron to Tampa Bay on Saturday.

Capitals acquire Michal Kempny from Blackhawks

Capitals coach Barry Trotz said teams can’t have enough defensive depth in discussing Washington acquiring Michal Kempny in a trade with the Chicago Blackhawks on Monday.

In exchange for Kempny, the Blackhawks received a conditional 2018 third-round pick from the Capitals, who made the deal shortly before their game at Buffalo and a week before the NHL trade deadline.

The Capitals will part with the higher selection between their own third-rounder and the Toronto pick they acquired from New Jersey as part of the Marcus Johansson trade.

“We see as the season goes on and the games get more intense, you need depth,” Trotz said. “And no one can have enough depth on defense.”

Women’s hockey expanding to 10 teams in 2022

The women’s hockey tournament will expand from eight to 10 teams for the 2022 Olympics in Beijing.

International Ice Hockey Federation President Rene Fasel confirmed the change at a news conference Monday.

Fasel says the Beijing organizing committee requested the expansion.

IIHF council chairwoman Zsuzsanna Kolbenheyer says the quality of women’s hockey around the world is good enough for this step.

She pointed to Japan beating Sweden 2-1 in overtime Sunday in the classification round and no team scoring more than eight goals in a game as signs of progress.

Beijing will be the seventh Olympics with women’s hockey since it was added in 1998 in Nagano.
