Marlins sign outfielder Maybin
Outfielder Cameron Maybin has signed a oneyear contract with the Miami Marlins, rejoining the team where he played in 2008-10.
Maybin gives the young, rebuilding Marlins much-needed experience, along with flexibility because he can play all three outfield positions. He was with the Angels and Astros last year and helped Houston win the World Series.
He batted only .228 in 2017 but had 33 steals to rank second in the American League. He joined the Marlins for Wednesday’s spring training workout.
Maybin, 30, is a .255 career hitter in 11 seasons with six teams. A first-round draft pick by Detroit in 2005, he originally joined the Marlins in the trade that sent Miguel Cabrera to the Tigers.
Orioles bring back Tillman to rotation
The Baltimore Orioles signed pitcher Chris Tillman to a $3 million, one-year contract that includes performance bonuses.
Tillman was 1-7 with a 7.84 ERA in 19 starts and five relief appearances last year. He is the second starter added by the Orioles in the past week after righthander Andrew Cashner.
Tillman likely will join righthanders Dylan Bundy, Kevin Gausman and Cashner in the rotation.
The 29-year-old right-hander lives in Sarasota and had been working out at the Orioles’ facility before spring training. Former Albany-Colonie Yankees manager and O’s skipper Buck Showalter watched Tillman throw and was impressed.
Tillman began last season on the disabled list with right shoulder stiffness.
Dolphins use franchise tag on Landry
Receiver Jarvis Landry has been given a non-exclusive franchise tag by the Miami Dolphins after leading the NFL with 112 catches in 2017.
The value of the tag is expected to be about $16 million. Miami made the move on Tuesday, the first day that teams could assign franchise tags.
The Dolphins hope to sign Landry to a multi-year deal, a person familiar with the team’s plans said. The person didn’t want to be identified because the Dolphins haven’t publicly discussed contract negotiations with Landry.
Landry had a franchise-record 112 catches and a careerhigh nine touchdowns in 2017, the final season of the four-year contract he signed before his rookie season.
