Sr. Gloria Mooney, S.U., 88, of Rhinebeck

Sr. Gloria Mooney, S.U., (Mother Mary Lawrence), a Sister of St. Ursula, died peacefully in Rhinebeck, N.Y., on Tuesday, Feb. 20, 2018, surrounded by members of her community, family and friends.

Born June 14, 1929, in Brooklyn, N.Y., to the late John Joseph and Elizabeth Grey Mooney, Gloria entered the Society of St. Ursula on Sept. 8, 1946, and made final vows on Sept. 26, 1953.

Before being called to leadership positions in the community, Gloria served as teacher and principal at the Academy of St. Ursula - Marygrove in Kingston, N.Y., and at St. Gregory the Great School in Milwaukee, Wis. Gloria taught at Notre Dame School in New York City., St. Joseph School in Kingston, N.Y., and St. Augustine School in Providence, R.I. She was also on the staff of the little Sisters of the Assumption Family Health Services in East Harlem. Most recently, Gloria served as community archivist and moderator of the Alumnae Associatio­n of Marygrove.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Elizabeth, and a brother, William.

Her sister, Sr. Mary Alice Mooney, S.U., her sisters in community, and numerous nieces and nephews survive her.

A Mass of the Resurrecti­on will be celebrated on Tuesday, Feb. 27, 2018, at 2:30 p.m. at Linwood Spiritual Center, 50 Linwood Road, Rhinebeck, N.Y.

Visiting hours will be 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., prior to the Mass.

We are grateful for the loving care Gloria was given by the staff at Thompson House and the Hudson Valley Hospice.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be sent to the Sisters of St. Ursula, 50 Linwood Road, Rhinebeck, N.Y. 12572.
