UAlbany men ranked No. 1 in Division lacrosse

The State University of New York achieved a first on Monday when two of its Division I lacrosse programs attained a No. 1 national ranking.

The Albany men moved into the top spot in both polls after their second straight convincing victory of the young season and the Stony Brook women joined them atop all three women’s polls.

It marks the first time that any Division I program in the SUNY system has been ranked No. 1.

SUNY’s system of universities, colleges and community colleges is one of the largest in the nation with 64 campuses scattered across the state.

Kane traded to Sharks

The San Jose Sharks have acquired forward Evander Kane from the Buffalo Sabres in a move to upgrade their depleted forward group.

The Sharks dealt a 2019 conditional draft pick, prospect Danny O’Regan and a 2020 conditional draft pick to the Sabres on Monday to add a high-scoring winger just before the trade deadline. San Jose never replaced forward Patrick Marleau after he left as a free agent last July for Toronto, waiting for the right moment to add a top six forward With center Joe Thornton sidelined with a knee injury and the Sharks fighting for a playoff spot, general manager Doug Wilson pounced at the deadline.

Sounders’ Morris out for season with knee injury

Seattle Sounders forward Jordan Morris will miss the 2018 MLS season because of a torn knee ligament.

The tear to his anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee came during last week’s CONCACAF Champions League matchup against El Salvador’s Santa Tecla.

General manager Garth Lagerwey said Monday initial tests appear to show no further damage. He expects Morris to have surgery in the next few weeks once the swelling subsides. Lagerwey wants Morris to fully recover and therefore will not rush to get him back late in the season.
