Kingston quartet earns berths in state meet

Kingston High will have four athletes competing Saturday at the state indoor track and field championsh­ips.

KINGSTON, N.Y. » Kingston High will have four athletes competing Saturday when the New York State Public High School Athletic Associatio­n holds its indoor track and field championsh­ips Saturday at the Ocean Breeze Track Facility on Staten Island.

Robert Becker, Stephanie Green and Monica Reyes are competing for the Tigers. Andy Lopez is an alternate on Section 9’s Intersecti­onal Relay.

Becker made states for a third consecutiv­e year and the second in the 1600-meter when won the state qualifier in 4:25.33.

Green had personal-best toss of 45-7.75 to place second and qualify for states in the weight throw. She beat her previous best by nearly three feet.

Reyes also had a PR by 2.5 feet to win the shot put with a 38-3.5.

Becker and Green also qualifired for the Emerging Elite section in the New Balance Nationals March 9-10 at the New York City Armory. Becker will run both the 800 and mile, while Green’s effort earned her a spot in the weight throw.

Jack McDonough and Ben Osborn also had big days at the qualifier for Kingston.

McDonough improved his career best in the weight throw by nearly five feet and added a foot for his best-ever shot put. He finished third in the shot with a 46-8 and fourth with a 54-3.5 weight throw, but missed the state standard in both.

Osborn, who struggled to clear 20 feet in the long jump all season, did a 20-8 on his third attempt and placed fourth overall.
