Heisman winner Crouch to coach Midland University

Eric Crouch, the 2001 Heisman Trophy winner at Nebraska, has been hired as an assistant football coach at Midland University.

Midland announced Tuesday that Crouch will coach running backs and special teams. The 1,400-student school is coached by Jeff Jamrog, a former Nebraska player who was the Cornhuskers’ defensive line coach when Crouch was a player.

The 39-year-old Crouch was quarterback for the Huskers in the 2001 national championship game, and the St. Louis Rams drafted him in the third round in 2002 as a receiver. Crouch never played an NFL regularseason game.

He lives in Omaha and has worked in sales of medical and recreation equipment.

The Pittsburgh Penguins have signed forward Patric Hornqvist to a five-year contract extension. The deal, announced Tuesday, has an average annual value $5.3 million and runs through the 2022-23 season.

The 31-year-old Hornqvist has been a vital part of Pittsburgh’s run to two straight Stanley Cups. He scored the seriesclinching goal in Game 6 of the 2017 Stanley Cup finals against Nashville.

Hornqvist was set to become a free agent this summer. Instead, he’ll remain in Pittsburgh, where he’s become part of a core that includes stars Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin and defenseman Kris Letang.

Hornqvist has 17 goals and 15 assists for the Penguins this season entering Tuesday night’s game against New Jersey. He was acquired in a 2014 trade with the Predators.

A Southeastern Louisiana University men’s basketball player and two other teens have been accused of taking part in a campus shooting that wounded two people.

NOLA.com/The Times-Picayune reports 19-year-old Jabbar Singleton, 18-year-old Herbert Joseph Jr. and 19-year-old Jacoby Senegal were arrested for the Friday shooting and identified Monday. University Police Department Director Harold Todd says the shooting was an isolated incident.

SLU Athletic Director Jay Artigues tells WVUE-TV that Singleton has been suspended indefinitely from the team for disciplinary reasons. Singleton is accused of illegal discharge of a firearm and carrying a firearm on school property. Joseph and Senegal are charged with two counts each of attempted murder, among other charges.
