Red Hook upsets Goshen to reach semis

Red Hook High advanced to Saturday’s Section 9 Class A boys basketball semifinals after upending Goshen.

Red Hook High Advanced to Saturday’s Section 9 Class A boys basketball semifinals after upending Goshen 71-57 in a quarterfin­al contest on Wednesday.

The fifth-seeded Raiders will travel to face top-seed and MidHudson Athletic League rival New Paltz at 4 p.m. In Saturday’s other semifinal, No. 2 Saugerties hosts No. 3 Cornwall at 7. The games were postponed by from Friday. The winners square off for the Class A crown 7 p.m. Monday at Mount Saint Mary College in Newburgh.

Leading by one point (49-48) heading into the fourth quarter, Red Hook outscored fourth-seeded Goshen 23-9 to put the game out of reach.

“We played our best quarter of the season,” Red Hook coach Matt Hayes said.

Hayes noted that holding Gladiators standout Henry Foley to 19 points — and just four in the fourth — was key to Red Hook’s victory.

Jason Davis scored 13 of his team-leading 26 points in the fourth, going 7 for 8 at the foul line in a game where the Raiders converted 14 of 17 free throws.

The Gladiators got hot in the third quarter, chipping away at the six-point lead the Raiders held at the half.

Red Hook had got off to a fast start and at one point held a 10-point lead in the first quarter.

Brandon Cahill scored 19 points, while Dylan Bayliss and James Flood each added eight for the Raiders.
