New York Festival of Song performs at Hall

-

Hudson Hall at the historic Hudson Opera House, 327 Warren St., Hudson, will open this year’s Classics on Hudson season with a performance by the New York Festival of Song titled “Protest” on Saturday, March 3, at 7 p.m.

Thirty years ago, Steven Blier and Michael Barrett embarked on a mission to redefine the song recital, mixing elements of theater, scholarship, fun and great voices. Now the New York Festival of Song is legend — both for its unforgettable concerts and the legion of brilliant young vocalists who have been mentored by Blier and Barrett.

New York Festival of Song is bringing its 30th anniversary tour to Hudson with “Protest.” It will be an evening of defiant, passionate and ironic songs that touch on some of the hot-button issues in today’s news: The rights of Latinos, Latinas, Muslims, Jews and the gay community; the plights of exiles and refugees; and the survival of the Earth itself. A panorama of composers, from Marc Blitzstein and Joni Mitchell to Randy Newman and Mohammed Fairouz, take an eloquent stand for equality, peace and rationality.

The program is scheduled to include “If It’s Magic” and “Big Brother” by Stevie Wonder, “Black and Blue” by Fats Waller, “Big Yellow Taxi” by Mitchell, “Joe Hill” by Alfred Hayes and Earl Robinson, and “Political Science” by Newman. Tickets are $25. Call (518) 822-1438 or visit hudsonhall.org for tickets or more information.
