Senate House celebrates maple season on April 7

WHAT: Event, “Sugaring Off: 18th Century Style” WHEN: April 7 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. WHERE: Senate House State Historic Site, 296 Fair St., Kingston DETAILS: Join the Senate House State Historic Site staff to celebrate the maple season. Activities include boiling maple sap to syrup, making jack wax candy, baking molasses cornbread and waffles over an open fire, hewing a log into a trough and making wooden buckets and spiles which were used to collect the sap. The First Ulster Militia will re-enact a raid on the sugar bush. Mark Rust will perform traditiona­l 18th century music on a variety of musical instrument­s, including banjo, violin, guitar and spoons. The event is free and open to the public. Free screening of ‘Newtown’ at UPAC

WHAT: Free screening of the documentar­y “Newtown” WHEN: March 16 at 7 p.m. WHERE: Ulster Performing Arts Center, 601 Broadway, Kingston DETAILS: Stockade Works, in associatio­n with the Bardavon, will host a free screening of the documentar­y “Newtown.” Through intimate testimonia­ls and exclusive access, the 2017 film focuses on the community of Newtown, Conn., in the aftermath of the largest mass shooting of schoolchil­dren in American history. The event will also offer an opportunit­y for attendees to further the conversati­on about gun safety reform during a post-screening panel discussion and a question-and-answer session with the film’s director Kim Snyder and expert panelists (to be announced).
