MLB tells Judge recruiting Machado against rules

Major League Baseball has told New York Yankees slugger Aaron Judge his comments attempting to recruit Baltimore shortstop Manny Machado violate the sport’s tampering rules, and Judge says he has learned the lesson.

When the Yankees played the Orioles in Sarasota on Wednesday, Judge encountered Machado on the field before the game.

“Adding him to our lineup that we’ve already got, it’d be something special,” Judge told reporters. “I told him, ‘You’d look good in pinstripes.’ “

Judge added: “He just kind of laughed it off. Didn’t really say much.”

Machado is eligible for free agency after this season, part of a class that includes Bryce Harper and Josh Donaldson.

Drexler named new Big3 commissioner

Hall of Fame basketball player Clyde Drexler is the new commissioner of the Big3 league.

Drexler coached a team last year in the inaugural season of Ice Cube’s 3-on-3 league of former NBA players. He’s signed a three-year deal as commissioner, the Big3 announced Thursday.

He replaces former NBA player Roger Mason Jr., who left following a dispute with the league.

Drexler starred for the Portland Trail Blazers and Houston Rockets during his 15-year career, winning a gold medal with the 1992 U.S. Olympic team.

He says the level of play and professionalism last season “far exceeded anything that many of us involved ever imagined.” He adds he looks forward to working with Cube and co-founder Jeff Kwatinetz to continue the league’s growth.

Fernando Torres scored twice as Atletico Madrid marched into the quarterfinals of the Europa League by thrashing Lokomotiv Moscow 5-1 Thursday.

Atletico, winner of the competition in 2010 and 2012, advanced 8-1 on aggregate.

Both Torres’ goals came in the second half. He converted a penalty in the 65th minute before adding his second with a low right-foot shot five minutes later.

Angel Correa, Saul Niguez and substitute Antoine Griezmann were also on target for Atletico in the second leg. Maciej Rybus scored for host Lokomotiv.
