“Green Golly and Her Golden Flute,” a funny and extraordinary musical adaptation of “Rapunzel,” will be performed Saturday, March 17, at 10:30 a.m. at Kingston Library, 55 Franklin St., Kingston.
The performance, part of the library’s Super Saturdays Performance Series for children ages 5 and older.
In this funny and extraordinarily musical adaptation of “Rapunzel,” flutist Barbara Siesel and singersongwriter-actor-storyteller Keith Torgan will introduce children to the art of flute and the magic of classical music. It will be a joyful morning of high spirits and laughter with this musical duo.
Rapunzel may have been horrified to spend her days trapped in that big old tower but not Green Golly. She was delighted! So inspired by all that whizzed past her window, she couldn’t help but make music. Herein lies the charm of “Green Golly and Her Golden Flute,” a funny musical event featuring the music of Mozart, Mendelssohn, Schubert, Bizet, Rimsky Korsakov, Chopin and Copland.
Together and separately, Siesel and Torgan have appeared in theaters, concert halls, museums, schools and libraries throughout the United States and around the world. Their “Green Golly and Her Golden Flute” children’s book and accompanying audio/music CD ere published by Eifrig Publishing in 2013, with illustrations by Suzanne Langelier-Lebeda. It is a Parents’ Choice Gold Award winner.
Torgan has written more than a thousand songs. Recently, Torgan and Siesel have been concentrating their efforts on The Green Golly Project (www.greengolly.com). The project’s purpose is to introduce classical music to children everywhere and to create new audiences for today and for the future.
Through live music theater performances, recordings, illustrated storybooks, sheet music, games, musical instruments and animated programming, the Green Golly Project is imagining a world in which classical music sings to a new generation.
