Emerge Gallery exhibition showcases Saugerties artists

-

“Exit 20: A Group Exhibition of Saugerties Artists” is currently on display at Emerge Gallery, 228A Main St., Saugerties.

Saugerties harbors an abundance of talent, with visual artists tucked throughout the town all creating unique and intriguing work. The exhibition includes art of various styles and mediums — acrylic, collage, drawings, mixed media, monoprints, oil, pastel, photography, sculpture and watercolor.

More than 30 artists living and working in Saugerties are participating in this exhibition. Among them is photographer Kay Kenny, who is presenting two works from her new series of photo montages, “Stone Goddess.”

Kenny is responding to the current political environment by using photos of statues of Greek and Roman Goddesses and placing them in contemporary settings. “I keep thinking about the fall of these ancient civilizations,” she said in a release. “The Goddesses are avatars as well as reminders of how vulnerable our democracy is and how history remains a guide to our future.”

Additional artists whose art may be familiar to the Saugerties community are also exhibiting new work. They include Tara Bach, known for her paint-pouring technique. She is working in a new color palette. Barbara Bravo, renowned for her ceramic and tile work, is exhibiting new collage works. Josepha Gutelius, known for her figurative paintings, will be exhibiting a work from her new focus, landscapes.

March’s window installation is a collection of figure sculptures by Saugerties artist Meredith Morabito. She uses natural materials, such as wood, to compliment the organic nature of her clay figures. “Sculpting, to me,” she said in the release, “becomes a mystical process where my thinking begins to quiet and the clay begins to take shape.”

Other participating artists include Loel Barr, Kelli Bickman, Kristy Bishop, Nancy Campbell, Michael Ciccone, Arabella Colton, Shelley Davis, Nancy deFlon, Katie Fisher, Steve Gentile, Jeff Helmuth, Ruth J. Hirsch, Deborah Jenkins, Ulf Loven, Marjorie Magid, Arzi McKeown, Stuart Mono, Patty Mooney, Ann Morris, Pamela Murnan, T.D. Petteys, Tad Richards, Marilyn Rowley, Roberta Sickler, Margaret Still, Amy Stypulkoski, Andrea Walcutt Perez and Marck Webster. “Exit 20” is curated by Emerge Gallery director Robert Langdon.

The exhibition runs through Monday, April 2. Gallery hours are Mondays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
