Kenneth E. Smith, 92, of Fancy Gap, Va., and formerly of Saugerties, N.Y., passed away on Wednesday, Feb. 28, 2018, due to complicati­ons of a hip fracture, at Grayson Rehabilita­tion and Healthcare in Independen­ce, Virginia.

Born May 12, 1925 in Saugerties, N.Y., he was son of the late Robert and Grace Smith. Ken graduated from Saugerties High School in 1943 and served in maritime service (Merchant Marine) during World War II. He graduated from Michigan State College (now University), in 1949, with a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineerin­g. He married Helen Ruth Swart on Oct. 12, 1953. Upon graduation from college, Ken went to work for the New York State Department Of Transporta­tion and worked for 29 years as a Civil Engineer until 1979, taking one year off to run a private business known as Ken-Rent Inc. After retiring from NYSDOT, Ken worked as a private consultant on highway constructi­on and airport projects from 1980 to 1994. Ken and Helen moved to Fancy Gap, Va., in 2005, where he enjoyed the mountains similar to his hometown area and the many wonderful people he became friends with, making many visits back north to see family and friends there as well.

Survivors include his wife, Helen Ruth Swart Smith; son, William R. Smith; daughter-in-law, Susan Steelman; daughters, Barbara Ann Rice and Donna Marie Smith; seven grandchild­ren; nine great-grandchild­ren, and many loving nieces and nephews.

His Service of Remembranc­e will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 24, 2018, at Seamon-Wilsey Funeral Home Inc., corner of John and Lafayette streets. Interment will follow in the Mount Marion Cemetery. Friends will be received Saturday from noon to 1 p.m.

Family suggests donations in his memory be made to Arbor Day, 211 N. 12th St., Lincoln, Neb. 68508.
