Shirley Luckner Spernyak, 89, formerly of Center Road, High Falls, died Saturday, March 17, 2018, at Ten Broeck Commons in Lake Katrine.

She was born in Corning, N.Y., Oct. 4, 1928, a daughter of the late Clayton and Rena Harris Luckner. An area resident for the past 63 years, she had been employed as a teacher at St. Peter’s School in Rosendale and later the coordinato­r and teacher of the CCD program. She was a member of St. Peter’s Church and a former member of the Altar Rosary Society. In addition to her church-related activities, she was a former Girl Scout leader, former member of the Rosendale Republican Club and a former member of the Rosendale Seniors.

Shirley married Alexander Spernyak on March 29, 1948, at St. James Church in Waverly, N.Y. They were married 58 years until his passing Sept. 22, 2006. She was a devoted wife and mother. She is survived by her three daughters and their husbands, Sharon Schoonmake­r (Elwin) of High Falls, Nancy Stange (Robert) of Stone Ridge, and Maryann Stokes (William) of Bloomingto­n. She was the grandmothe­r of 11 grandchild­ren, Mark (Jennifer), Michael (Christina), Christophe­r (Mary), Daniel (Danielle) Schoonmake­r and Kathryn (Ryan) Lauchaire, Michele Juric, Thomas (Rebecca) Stange, Kristen (Steven) Helm, Katelyn, William (Rebecca) and Joseph Stokes. She was the great-grandmothe­r of 22 great-grandchild­ren. Also surviving is a sister, Lois Keene (Richard) of Nichols, N.Y., and several nieces, nephews, greatniece­s and greatnephe­ws. She was predecease­d her sister, Patricia Baine, and a granddaugh­ter, Laura Schoonmake­r.

Her funeral will be held Tuesday at 9:15 a.m. from the George J. Moylan Funeral Home Inc., 2053 Route 32, Rosendale. A Mass of Christian Burial

will be offered at 10 a.m. at St. Peter’s Church, Rosendale. Friends may call at the funeral home on Monday from 4 to 8 p.m. Interment will be in St. Peter’s Cemetery, Rosendale.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, Tenn. 38101-1942, or to the Marbletown First Aid Unit, P.O. Box 323, High Falls, N.Y. 12440.
