Village to auction parcel at Partition and Montross

Village trustees have voted 5-2 auction off a small, vacant parcel at the corner of Montross and Partition streets, with a starting figure of $10,000.

The property was dis-

cussed at a Village Board meeting Monday, with officials saying several potential buyers have expressed interest in the 0.6-acre parcel.

“There’s five people who are fighting over it right now,” Trustee Donald Hackett said.

In favor of the sale were Mayor Bill Murphy, Trustee Brian Martin, Trustee Terry Parisian, Trustee Vince Buono, and Trustee Jeannine Mayer, while Hackett and Trustee Jeff Helmuth were opposed.

The Ulster County GIS web site reports the parcel has about 88 feet of frontage along Montross Street and is about 33 feet deep.

Board members determined last year that the parcel was not large enough to be used as a parking lot.

Hackett voted against the auction after saying the parcel should be considered as the location for an electric vehicle charging station.

“We may need that property

to put two electric spots on there ... for just the electric vehicles,” he said.

Parisian disagreed, saying the 0.17-mile distance along Partition Street to Main Street was too far to attract visitors to the business district.

“People are not going to park their car there and walk up to the village and enjoy our dinner,” he said.

Officials did not know how long the village has owned the parcel, which the county reports has an assessed value of $41,000.
