Arrieta sent to minors for conditioning

Philadelphia pitcher Jake Arrieta has been assigned to Class A Clearwater while working into shape for his Phillies debut.

Since the 2015 NL Cy Young Award winner got a late start in spring training, finalizing a $75 million, three-year deal March 12, he will stay in Florida to pitch simulated games before making his first start for Philadelphia on April 8.

The Phillies will go with four starters until Arrieta is ready to pitch.

Arrieta has started two spring training games for the Phillies, giving up 10 hits, two homers and six runs in five innings. The 32-year-old went 1410 with a 3.53 ERA last season with the Chicago Cubs.

Philadelphia opened the season Thursday against the Atlanta Braves.

Tulowitzki placed on 60day DL

Blue Jays shortstop Troy Tulowitzki has been put on the 60-day disabled list because of bone spurs in his right heel, retroactive to March 28.

Tulowitzki suffered a seasonending ankle injury last July 28 and has not played since. He hit and fielded grounders during spring training but was unable to run. The five-time All-Star has missed at least 30 games in each of the past six seasons, and is now guaranteed to extend that setback streak.

Tulowitzki has the bone spurs for at least three years, but they have been bothering him during his recovery from surgery to repair the ligament damage suffered when he stepped on C.J. Cron’s foot while trying to beat out an infield hit in a game against the Los Angeles Angels.

Moore returns to UConn as assistant

Former Quinnipiac coach Tom Moore is returning as an assistant coach at UConn, where he spent 13 years on Hall of Fame coach Jim Calhoun’s staff.

Moore was an assistant last year under Dan Hurley at Rhode Island and becomes the first coach to join Hurley’s staff at UConn. Hurley was hired by UConn last week to replace Kevin Ollie after the school’s second straight losing season and amid an NCAA investigation.

Moore went 162-146 in 10 seasons at Quinnipiac before being fired at the end of the 201617 season.

Hurley said Thursday that he believes Moore’s ties to Amateur Athletic Union programs in the Northeast will be a valuable recruiting asset.
