Boston Marathon security tight

About 5,000 uniformed and undercover police officers, surveillance drones, bomb- and chemical-sniffing dogs and heavy trucks blocking streets are just some of the security measures being used to protect this year’s Boston Marathon, law enforcement officials said Tuesday.

Authorities are taking no risks when it comes to the 122nd running of the marathon, even though there are no known threats to the April 16 race that goes through eight cities and towns.

“At this point in time, I can tell you neither the FBI, other U.S. government agencies or our state and local law enforcement partners are aware of any specific, active or credible threats directed at this year’s marathon,” said Harold Shaw, special agent in charge of the FBI’s Boston office.

Blues’ Gunnarson out with torn ACL

St. Louis Blues defenseman Carl Gunnarsson will miss at least six months on the ice after surgery to repair a torn ALC in his left knee.

The Blues say the 31-year-old Gunnarsson was hurt during the first period of the Blues’ 4-1 win over Vancouver on March 23. In 63 games this season, the Swede had five goals and four assists along with 22 penalty minutes.

Earlier this week, the Blues said forward Scottie Upshall is out indefinitely with a lacerated left kidney. Upshall was injured Saturday night in a 6-0 loss to the Arizona Coyotes.

St. Louis also is without defenseman Jay Bouwmeester (hip injury) and winger Robby Fabbri (knee) as it chases a playoff spot.

Mavs’ Noel suspended five games

Dallas Mavericks center Nerlens Noel has been suspended for the final five games of the season for a violation of the NBA’s anti-drug program.

The NBA announced the suspension Tuesday, ending a lost season for a player trying to earn a long-term contract after failed negotiations last offseason resulted in him signing the team’s qualifying offer of just $4.1 million for one year. The suspension starts Tuesday night against Portland.

Noel played just 30 games, with most of the missed time coming after surgery for a torn ligament in his left thumb in December. Before that injury was announced, the 23-year-old Noel had appeared to fall out of favor with coach Rick Carlisle.
