4-time Olympic biathlon medalist Svendsen retires
Norwegian biathlete Emil Hegle Svendsen, a fourtime Olympic champion, has retired from the sport.
Svendsen won individual and relay gold at the 2010 Olympics, and mass start and mixed relay gold in 2014. At this year’s Pyeongchang Olympics, he won two silver medals and a bronze.
In comments reported by Norwegian broadcaster NRK, the 32-year-old Svendsen says it’s “actually a huge pleasure” to retire.
He says he “needed a little time after the Olympic Games season because I often felt that the spark could come back. But I wasn’t close to (getting it back).”
Svendsen follows Norwegian biathlete Ole Einar Bjoerndalen, an eight-time Olympic champion, into retirement. The 44-year-old Bjoerndalen announced his retirement last week.
Lions sign QB Cassel to add depth behind Stafford
The Detroit Lions have signed quarterback Matt Cassel.
Detroit put the free agent on the roster Monday, adding depth behind Matthew Stafford.
Cassel played sparingly the past two seasons in Tennessee. The 13-year veteran has also played for Dallas, Buffalo, Minnesota, Kansas City and New England.
He started 15 games in 2008 with the Patriots when Lions general manager Bob Quinn and coach Matt Patricia also worked for the franchise. Cassel has started 81 games in his career, completing 59 percent of his passes for 17,449 yards with 104 touchdowns and 81 interceptions.
Jake Rudock, drafted by Detroit in the sixth round two years ago, and Cassel are expecting to compete to be Stafford’s backup.
Coach Capello officially announces his retirement
Fabio Capello has announced his retirement from coaching.
The former AC Milan, Real Madrid, Roma and Juventus coach tells RAI state radio that he’s not interested in the open job with Italy’s national team.
The 71-year-old Capello left as coach of Chinese club Jiangsu Suning last month just three matches into the season
“I’ve already had experiences with the England and Russia national teams,” Capello said. “I wanted to coach a club once more and Jiangsu was my last football job. I did everything that I wanted to. I’m pleased with what I did and now I’ll enjoy being an analyst. You always win in that role.”
Capello was most successful at Milan, guiding the Rossoneri to four Serie A titles and the 1994 Champions League trophy.
