Newburgh hands Kingston first loss
Three Newburgh pitchers held a struggling Kingston High squad to a single hit Tuesday as the Tigers lost 4-2 in an Orange County Interscholastic Athletic Association Division I contest.
Lucas Prokosh, Braxton Landers and Sean Rafferty combined on the one-hitter with Landers getting the win in relief.
The (1-1) Tigers struck out 10 times and had eight fly-ball outs.
“It was nothing overpowering, just a poor performance at the plate,” Kingston coach Mike Groppuso said. “We showed our youth and inexperience by not being able to capitalize on six walks to our top three hitters.
“A lot of selfish at-bats and not trying to execute the situation at hand.”
Prokosh threw 92 pitches in three innings, including walking the bases loaded then fanning three in the first frame. He finished with eight strikeouts and five walks.
Jake McNutt broke up the nohit bid with a fifth-inning single off Landers.
The Tigers threatened to tie
in the seventh when they had runners on second and third with one out. Rafferty came in to get a popup and a fly ball for the save.
Christian Ott took the loss, despite a good outing. He struck out four, walked one and allowed six hits in a five-inning stint.
Kingston, which won Monday’s opener, will host Newburgh in the rubber game of their three-game series 4:30 p.m. today.
