The blaze started in a secondfloor kitchen in an apartment building on a state Route 213 farm.

Two adults and two children were displaced by a kitchen fire in an apartment building at a farm on state Route 213, a fire department official said Wednesday.

The Rifton Fire Department responded about 5 p.m. Tuesday to a 911 call placed by a resident of the building at 1626 Route 213, Chief Steve Peterson said. He said one woman and two children in the upstairs apartment where the fire started were displaced, along with one woman in the downstairs unit.

All four residents got out of the building before firefighters arrived, Peterson said.

The fire chief said the blaze has been deemed accidental.

The upstairs apartment can be rebuilt, and the downstairs unit sustained only minor smoke and water damage and will be habitable soon, Peterson said.

The Mid-Hudson Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross said it was providing assistance to the displaced residents.

Peterson said firefighters “did a great job on the fire attack and a fantastic job of containing it to one apartment.”

The fire was under control in about 15 minutes, he said.

The four residents were treated at the scene by the Esopus Ambulance squad for minor injuries but were not taken to a hospital, he said.
