Kingston triumphs twice at tournament

Kingston High’s softball team improved its record to 4-1 with a pair of wins Saturday at the Shenendehowa Tournament.

The Tigers defeated Columbia 5-2 and Shenenedhowa 11-6.

“Those are some top Section 2 schools,” Kingston coach Trishann Hayes said. “To be able to go up there and see some different pitching was good.”

Lauren Shambo struck out six, walked three and allowed just one earned run on seven hits in a complete-game effort against Columbia.

Megan Peace doubled twice and Alyssa Villielm had a pair of RBI in that contest.

The Tigers got a run off a passed ball in the first inning, then tacked on two runs in the third on Peace’s first double and a sacrifice fly from Villielm. A walk and another Peace double set up a two-run fifth. Villielm singled in one and freshman Hailee Binney pushed across another on a bunt.

Sydney Bonewit and Shannon Bonewit both reached four times in the game. Sydney walked three times and reached on an error. Shannon, who scored twice, singled and also drew three walks.

Shannon Bonewit pitched fourplus innings to get the win over Shenendehowa. Shambo came in to get out of a bases-loaded, noout jam to clinch the victory. Because of the cold and wind, the

coaches had agreed beforehand to play just five innings.

Kaitlynn Schrowang had a big outing, driving in five runs on three hits, including

two home runs. She hit two-run homers in both the first and fourth innings and had a run-scoring single in the third.

Kingston took charge with a seven-run fourth.

Jessica Chilcott had three RBI on a single and double, Shannon Bonewit drove in two runs with a

single and double, Alyssa Finno had two singles, and Peace, Shambo and Grace Tremper each had a double in the win.

The Tigers are scheduled to play their home opener 4:30 p.m. Monday against Orange County Interscholastic Athletic Association foe Pine Bush.
