Actor Harry Anderson dies at age 65

He was best known for playing off-the-wall after-hours Judge Harry T. Stone on the NBC comedy series 'Night Court.'

ASHEVILLE, N.C. » Harry Anderson, the actor best known for playing an offthe-wall judge working the night shift of a Manhattan court room in the televised comedy series “Night Court,” has been found dead in his North Carolina home. Anderson was 65. A statement from the Asheville Police Department said officers responded to a call from Anderson’s home early Monday and found him dead. The statement said foul play is not suspected.

On “Night Court,” Anderson played Judge Harry T. Stone, a young jurist who professed his love for singer Mel Torme, actress Jean Harlow, magic tricks and his collection of art-deco ties.

The series ran on NBC from 1984 to 1992. In addition to Anderson, “Night Court” starred John Larroquett­e as prosecutor Dan Fielding, Markie Post as public defender Christine Sullivan and Richard Moll as bailiff Bull Shannon.

After “Night Court,” Anderson starred in the CBS comedy series “Dave’s World.” The show, based on the writings of newspaper columnist Dave Barry, ran from 1993 to 1997.

Anderson’s television credits also included the miniseries “It,” based on the Stephen King horror novel.

In addition, he appeared on the series “Cheers” and “Tales From The Crypt.”

In 2000, Anderson left Hollywood and moved to New Orleans, where he operated a nightclub and a magic and curiosity shop. He and his current wife, Elizabeth Morgan, decided to leave in 2006 and moved to North Carolina due to issues stemming from the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

Anderson is survived by two children from his first marriage to Leslie Pollack, and by Morgan.
