Top high schoolers announced

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. » Grace Morrissey has been named valedictor­ian of the New Paltz High School Class of 2018, and Oliver Goland is this year’s salutatori­an.

The honors were announced Wednesday by school district Superinten­dent Maria Rice and high school Principal Barbara Clinton.

Morrissey, daughter of Katherine and Joe Morrissey, has a grade average of 100.78 and has maintained a rigorous course schedule that includes numerous Advanced Placement classes.

She is vice president of the school’s French Club, has been a Mock Trial attorney for two of her three years on the team, is a member of the National Honor Society, is the student representa­tive to the Board of Education, has played varsity tennis and golf, and does extensive volunteer work.

Morrissey plans to attend the College of Holy Cross and major in economics and minor and French.

Goland, son of Lisa and David Goland, has a grade average of 100.44 and has been a member of the school’s National Honor Society chapter, Science Olympiad team, Student Government and Mathletes, of which he has been co-president this year.

He also is a National Merit Commended Scholar finalist and has been a member of the SUNY New Paltz Youth Symphony for the five years.

For college, Goland is considerin­g SUNY Stony Brook, Rensselaer Polytechni­c Institute, Cornell University and Johns Hopkins University. He plans to pursue a career in bioenginee­ring or chemical engineerin­g.
