Park hosts Earth Day event Saturday

KINGSTON, N.Y. » Forsyth Park will host the city’s sixth Kingston Earth Fair on Saturday.

The event is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Lucas Avenue park, which is home to Forsyth Nature Center. Admission is free.

“Environmen­tal stewardshi­p begins at home,” Kingston Mayor Noble said in a press release announcing the event. “Our Earth Fair offers a variety of activities and demonstrat­ions for attendees to explore the different ways they can protect our environmen­t and often save money at the same time.

“We are fortunate to live in a community made up of individual­s, organizati­ons and businesses working to build a resilient and sustainabl­e city,” said Noble, a strong proponent of environmen­tal protectio and a former environmen­tal educator for the city. “This event is yet another example of our community moving together in the right direction.”

Event partners include the Climate Smart Kingston Commission and the group New Yorkers for Clean Power.

“We are so excited to be hosting this great event again, and this year the

event has grown exponentia­lly with an added focus on the home-energy efficiency, retrofits and restoratio­n, historical preservati­on, housing rehab and financing,” Julie Noble, the city’s environmen­tal educator and stainabili­ty coordinato­r, said in the press release.

“It is so important for the city of Kingston to come together around Earth Day and Arbor Day, to celebrate all of the incredible assets we have in our area and to build environmen­tal stewardshi­p in our community,” Julie Noble, the mayor’s wife, added.

The Earth Fair will feature numerous activities, performanc­es and demonstrat­ions. There will live music and other entertainm­ent; sustainabl­e housing and energy efficiency exhibits and demonstrat­ions; more than 50 “green lifestyle” vendors and exhibitors; and nature-based children’s activities.

There also will be an Earth Day Exchange Store where “gently used” items can be swapped.

Additional­ly, an electronic­s collection and recycling

program, sponsored by the Ulster County Resource and Recovery Agency, will be conducted at the fair; rain barrels and home composters will be up for sale; free paper shredding will be offered; and attendees can ride a solar-powered merry-goround.

The event also will feature yoga, a meditation class, bike safety lessons, an electric vehicle display, a bird walk, and an Arbor Day dedication and tree planting.

Also for Earth Day, Tim Guinee of Marbletown, an actor and a leader in former Vice President Al Gore’s Climate Reality Project, will give a presentati­on Sunday about the latest science regarding climate change in the area.

The lecture will being at 3 p.m. at the Ashokan Center in Olivebridg­e.

A press release about the Sunday event said the Climate Reality Project is a “diverse group of individual­s who seek to catalyze a global solution to the climate crisis by supporting urgent action on climate change across every level of society.”
