1 DEAD, 10 HURT IN HOUSE FIRE
Early-morning, three-alarm blaze rips through apartment building located at 18-20 Russell St.
SAUGERTIES, N.Y. » One person was killed and 10 others injured in a fire that ripped through a Russell Street apartment house early Saturday morning, a fire official said.
Deputy Fire Coordinator Chris Worrad of the Ulster County Emergency Management Division of Fire Services said the fire was reported at 2:19 a.m. Saturday at 18-20 Russell St.
The cause of the fire still was being investigated, Worrad said during a press conference at the scene.
The identity and gender of the person who died was not immediately released. The person, Worrad said, was found dead inside the threeunit building.
The 10 people who were hurt suffered varying minor injuries and were taken to hospitals including HealthAlliance Hospital on Broadway in Kingston, Albany Medical Center and Westchester County Medical Center.
The injured, who also were
not immediately identified, were able to get out of the building before firefighters arrived at the three-alarm blaze.
The wood-frame apartment building was significantly charred and is not habitable, Worrad said. About 100 firefighters, including those on stand-by, from numerous departments dealt with the blaze, Worrad said.
The Red Cross said it provided financial assistance for necessities such as shelter, food and clothing to six adults and a 9-year-old child. Volunteers also offered emotional support, health services, comfort kits containing personal care items, and a stuffed animal for the child.
In the coming days, Red Cross said its staff and volunteers will remain available to help those affected by the fire.
The fire spread to the nearby structure at 22 Russell St., but it was unclear how many people, if any, lived there and whether it was habitable afterward.
