More than 500 runners take the roads in Kingston Sunday for the 36th Kiwanis Kingston Classic.
More than 500 runners take the roads and trails around the Rondout Creek Waterfront in downtown Kingston today for the 36th Kiwanis Kingston Classic.
The event’s iconic 10-kilometer race starts at 1 p.m. in T.R. Gallo Park, followed by the 2.1mile walk/run at 1:30.
Package pickup and raceday registration will be held in Gallo Park starting at 10 a.m. Registration cutoff is at noon. Cost is $25 per person for the 10k, $15 for the 2.1-mile.
Last year’s races were held in warm weather. Sunday’s forecast is more spring-like with sun and temperatures in the low 60’s.
There were 510 signed up when online registration closed on Wednesday. Close to 400 of those were registered for the 10k. There were 575 combined registered in 2017 with 403 participants in the 10k and 172 signed up for the 2.1-mile.
Runners will have scenic views throughout, including the Hudson River while going through Rotary Park and the Rondout Lighthouse when they are on the Trolley rail trail near the end of the race. There are a few rolling upgrades and a pair of challenge upgrades along the way on a course that is relatively flat. The course takes runners across the Wurts Street bridge, turning back to Kingston before they reach U.S. Route 9W.
The post-race party and awards ceremony will take place at the Ole Savannah Restaurant, located just down the road from the finish line.
