Seven area residents attending the State University of New York at Oneonta — Taane Pegg of Kingston, Olivia Profaci of New Paltz, Alina Amin of Shokan, Julia Ospina of Accord, Ella Weiss of Marlboro, Leigha Knepper of Rhinebeck and Olivia Smith of Catskill — received the 2017-18 Susan Sutton Smith Award for academic excellence.

To be eligible for the award, a student must be a freshman, sophomore or junior with a grade-point average of 3.9 or higher.

Pegg is majoring in political science. Profaci, Amin and Smith are all majoring in psychology. Ospina is majoring in early childhood/childhood education. Weiss is majoring in communicat­ion studies. Knepper is majoring in dietetics.

••• Two area residents attending the University at Albany — Taariq Jones of Kingston and Paul Vita of Pine Bush — were among the students honored at the university’s School of Business 33rd Annual Student Award Ceremony.

Jones was awarded the Towers Watson Student Award. Vita was awarded the Alumni of Professor Ronald W. Forbes Scholarshi­p.

••• Samantha Kulcsar of Palenville, a student at Columbia-Greene Community College in Greenport, was named the recipient of the 2018 Mary Davidson Scholarshi­p.

The scholarshi­p is in memory of Davidson, who was a professor of psychology and sociology, as well as the head of the human services department. It was establishe­d by Davidson’s daughter, Mary Sapp, and Davidson’s many friends in honor and recognitio­n of her many years of service to the college.

Kulcsar is majoring in human services. ••• Ellie Quinlan of Red Hook, a student at the State University of New York at Oneonta, was among eight pre-service teachers at the college who took part in the Hudson-Mohawk Valley Area Mathematic­s Conference at Burnt HillsBalls­ton Lake High School on March 24.

The associatio­n is an affiliate of the Associatio­n of Mathematic­s Teachers of New York State. The associatio­n’s purpose is to encourage interest in math and math education and further the cooperativ­e study of issues regarding math education.

Quinlan is majoring in mathematic­s education.

••• Matthew Hogan of Saugerties, a student at the State University of New York at Potsdam, was chosen to perform in the Gilbert and Sullivan operetta “The Pirates of Penzance.”

The production was scheduled to be performed April 20 and 21in the Sara M. Snell Music Theater.

Hogan, a student at SUNY Potsdam’s Crane School of Music, played the Pirate King.

••• Elizabeth Neese of Red Hook, a student at Coastal Carolina University in Conway, S.C., helped host the university’s TEAL Youth Day on March 23.

More than 130 elementary and middle school students who are part of the Dalton and Linda Floyd Mentoring Program at the university attended the event. The event’s purpose was to provide children and youngsters participat­ing in the mentoring program the opportunit­y to visit a college campus and to see where their mentors go to school.

The university’s student mentors normally visit children at their school each week. This also encouraged and motivated the children who attended to pursue higher education in the future.

posers Forum on April 8.

••• Seven area residents — Joseph Prizzia and Saira Agloumi, both of Kingston; Ellen Salavarria, Marlo DeLaRosa and Lauren Montgomery, all of Highland; Kathleen McManus of Red Hook and Sheila Cod y of Rhinebeck — were named to the dean’s list at Marist College in Poughkeeps­ie for the fall semester.

Agloumi and Salavarria are both members of the Class of 2021 and are pursuing paralegal certificat­es. Prizzia is a

member of the Class of 2018 and is pursuing a paralegal certificat­e. DeLaRosa, Montgomery, McManus and Cody are all members of the Class of 2021 are majoring in profession­al studies.
