Saugerties turns aside Wallkill

SAUGERTIES, N.Y. » Saugerties High’s baseball team improved its record to 5-1 Friday as it held off Wallkill for a 5-2 MidHudson Athletic League victory.

The Sawyers scored runs run in the fourth to build their lead. Wallkill rallied for two runs in the sixth and had runners on the corners with two out, but reliever Brandon Numssen came in and struck out the next batter to squelch the comeback bid.

Rick Janssen, who took a line drive off his ankle in the second, struck out five and held Wallkill to six hits over 5 2/3 innings for the win. Numssen returned to pitch the seventh to get the save.

“He was limping hard after the game, so I knew it hurt him during the game, but you would never have known,” Saugerties coach Mike Pugliese said.

Kieran Defino drove in two runs for the Sawyers, who are now 4-1 in the MHAL.

Andrew Strobach had two hits and two RBI and battled for five innings, taking the loss for (0-6, 0-8) Wallkill. Dan Hopper doubled in one run and Andrew Darrow had a RBI single for the Panthers. Pine Plains 9, Webutuck 0

At Pine Plains, Matthew Funk and Adam Funk combined on a four-hit shutout for the (4-0 MHAL, 5-1 overall) Bombers.

Matthew struck out 11, walked two and allowed just two hits over five innings for the win. Adam, a sophomore, fanned six, walked non and surrendere­d two hits in his two innings of relief work.

Evan Proper had a tworun double, Matthew Funk a RBI triple, Ethan Generelli singled in one run and Calab McCaul doubled for Pine Plains.

Rhett Baily had a pair of singles for (1-4, 1-5) Webutuck.
