Pair of Siena pitchers toss one-hitters

Lauren Butts and Maddie McMahon each twirled one-hit gems to lead Siena Softball to a doublehead­er sweep of Marist. Game One: Siena 2, Marist 0 Butts surrendere­d just one hit and one walk while striking out five to record her third shutout of the season. She retired 14 of the final 15 batters she faced to move into a tie for third place all-time in program history with her fifth career shutout.

Siena (13-19, 8-4) scored single runs in the fourth and six innings. A two-out throwing error plated Patricia Kalesse with the first score, while a Jazmin Ortiz RBI double chased home Brooke Taylor with the second. The Saints recorded eight hits, led by a pair from Madysen Cossack.

Braves call up top prospect Acuna

Top outfield prospect Ronald Acuna is set to join the Atlanta Braves.

The Braves planned to promote the 20-year-old from Triple-A Gwinnett on Wednesday to join them in Cincinnati.

Acuna rose from Class A to Triple-A in 2017, hitting a combined .325 with 21 home runs, 82 RBIs and 44 stolen bases. Then he was selected MVP of the Arizona Fall League. He began this season as MLB. com’s No. 2 overall prospect behind Angels two-way sensation Shohei Ohtani.

Acuna teased Braves fans with a monster spring training, batting .432 with four homers, four stolen bases and a 1.247 OPS in 16 games.

At Triple-A this month, Acuna was off to a slow start, hitting .232 with one homer and two RBIs in 69 at-bats.

Duo named MAAC Player, Pitcher of the Week

Two of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference’s weekly awards have been bestowed upon Siena Baseball. Senior first baseman Joe Drpich has been named the MAAC Player of the Week, and red-shirt junior captain Ryan Bellomo has been tabbed the MAAC Pitcher of the Week.

The MAAC Preseason Player of the Year, Drpich earns the conference’s Player of the Week honor for the first time in his illustriou­s career. The South Salem, New York standout recorded hits in all five games last week — including four multihit performanc­es — en route to hitting an astounding .571 (1221). He had three hits including a pair of RBI doubles in a midweek road win at Atlantic 10 foe UMass, and went 7-13 collective­ly at the plate in a pivotal road series triumph at two-time defending MAAC Regular Season Champion Fairfield.
