YOUTH ON THE GO
Four students at John A. Coleman Catholic High School earned awards on this year’s National Latin Exam.
Sara Jeiter-Johnson received a gold medal and a summa cum laude certificate, her second. Nathaniel Mitzel and Emma Dentico each received silver medals and maxima cum laude certificates. Sydney Flood received a cum laude certificate.
More than 143,000 scholars from all 50 states and 25 different countries took the test at its various levels.
Coleman Principal James Lyons said in a press release, “Although some consider Latin a dead language, it lives on in at least five modern European languages which are all derived from Latin. Even English, with its Anglo-Saxon base, is estimated to have taken up to 60 percent of its words from Latin.
••• Julia Czermerys and Winnie Pan were named the Hunter-Tannersville Middle/ High School students of the month for March. Czermerys, a ninth-grader, represents the “Maroon Group” (grades 7-9). she has been on the Odyssey of the Mind Team since fifth grade and has been involved in the Drama Club since seventh grade. She started as manager of the Ski Team in sixth grade and has been a member of the team since then.
Czermrys has been named to the superintendent’s honor roll status each quarter. Last year, she was nominated for the Student of the Year in many of her classes and was the winner in her science class. Czermerys said in a press release that she likes school because it pushes her to work harder. She likes to sew, embroider and crochet. She is very interested in photography. She works at Sprouts over the summer and helps at religious education.
In the future, she would like to go to college to become a child advocacy lawyer.
Czermerys is the daughter of Marc and Kelly Czermerys of Tannersville.
Pan, a senior, represents the “Gold Group” (grades 10-12). She is the president of the Tri-M Music Honor Society, plays first flute in band and is a Chorus member. She is vice president of the Student Council and the Ethel Slutzky National Art Honor Society. In addition, Pan is the Ssecretary for the National Honor Society, coeditor for the yearbook and is a member of the Drama Club.
She has been named to
the superintendent’s honor roll each quarter and previously was a Student of the Month winner in October 2016. She is the co-captain of the cross country team and is a Varsity
Club member. Pan has also done an internship at the Mountain Top Library. She enjoys music and creating 3-D artworks.
Pan plans to attend a college where she can graduate early, hoping to go onto medical school to be a pediatrician.
She is the daughter of Dan Ru Zheng and Fat Zhun Pan of Hunter.
Students are nominated
by school staff. The criteria for nominations are academic perseverance, involvement in school/community activities, participation in sports/hobbies, respectfulness, determined to succeed in an endeavor, dedication to do their best and dependability.
Each student of the month enjoys a lunch or dinner for two at The Last Chance Antiques and Cheese Café, a one-day lift ticket at Hunter Mountain provided by Peak Resorts, two passes to the Mountain Cinema from the Catskill Mountain Foundation, an engraved pen from the Student Parent Teacher Organization, a family bumper sticker from the Board of Education and a complimentary special breakfast from Principal Tom Cervola.
