Region moving straight from winter to summer
Snow accumulate in the area's higher elevations on Monday. Today, look for a high in the mid-80s.
KINGSTON, N.Y. » Put down your ice scrapers and step away from your snow blowers. It’s about to feel like summer out there.
After a pleasant Tuesday, the Mid-Hudson Valley is due for unseasonably warm temperatures — a high in the mid-80s — on Wednesday, just two days after snow coated the ground in some of the area’s higher elevations.
And there’s an “air quality health advisory” in effect from 11 a.m. to 11 a.m. Wednesday to boot, owing to elevated ozone levels that often occur on hot days.
John Quinlan, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Albany, said the warm temperatures can be attributed to a “Bermuda high off the Eastern seaboard” and a clockwise rotation of very warm air from the southwest.
The warm weather will be accompanied by some humidity, but “it’s not going to be as humid as summer,” Quinlan said.
Quinlan said dew points Wednesday could be in the 50s or low 60s. “Once it’s past 60, it’s a little uncomfortable and we may have dew points in the lower 60s,” he said.
And the warm weather is forecast to stick around for a few days. The weather service on Tuesday predicted high temperatures of 84 on Thursday, 78 on Friday and 74 on Saturday.
There also is a chance of showers and thunderstorms Thursday night, Friday and Friday night.
Regarding the ozone advisory, state health officials recommend limiting strenuous outdoor physical activity to reduce the risk of adverse health effects.
