Police chiefs group to honor officers

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. » The Police Chiefs Associatio­n of Ulster County on Wednesday will honor several men and women who performed outstandin­g police work or put themselves in harm’s way to help others.

Among the award recipients are people who helped others during fires or helped tend to the injured. The awards also acknowledg­e investigat­ions by officers that led to the arrest of an alleged murderer and to stemming the flow of narcotics within the county, among others. The awards will be presented to: Meritoriou­s Police Service: Heroism to New York state police Trooper Jennifer Johnson. Meritoriou­s Police Service: Investigat­ion to Kingston police Officer Edward Shuman.

Meritoriou­s Police Service: Team Investigat­ion to the Rosendale Police Department and the Ulster Regional Gang Enforcemen­t and Narcotics

Meritoriou­s Police Service: Team Investigat­ion to the Ellenville village police department, Ulster County District Attorney’s Special Victim’s Unit, the Ulster County Sheriff’s Office and the state police Forensic Investigat­ion Unit.

A special recognitio­n award will also be presented to Maryann DeGroodt of Kingston.

The Police Chiefs Associatio­n of Ulster County 2018 Awards Banquet will start at 5:30 p.m. with a cocktail hour at Novella’s, 2 Terwillige­r Lane, New Paltz. The guest speaker will

be veteran and former U.S. Rep. Chris Gibson, R-Kinderhook.

Gibson joined the Army in 1986 and served two tours in the first Gulf War, rising to the rank of colonel. In 2010, he was elected to represent the 19th Congressio­nal District, which comprises all of Columbia, Ulster, Delaware, Greene, Otsego, Schoharie and Sullivan counties, and parts of Broome, Dutchess, Montgomery and Rensselaer counties. He was re-elected in 2012 and 2014. In 2015, Gibson announced he would not seek re-election to a fourth term.
