Police chiefs group to honor officers
NEW PALTZ, N.Y. » The Police Chiefs Association of Ulster County on Wednesday will honor several men and women who performed outstanding police work or put themselves in harm’s way to help others.
Among the award recipients are people who helped others during fires or helped tend to the injured. The awards also acknowledge investigations by officers that led to the arrest of an alleged murderer and to stemming the flow of narcotics within the county, among others. The awards will be presented to: Meritorious Police Service: Heroism to New York state police Trooper Jennifer Johnson. Meritorious Police Service: Investigation to Kingston police Officer Edward Shuman.
Meritorious Police Service: Team Investigation to the Rosendale Police Department and the Ulster Regional Gang Enforcement and Narcotics
Team.
Meritorious Police Service: Team Investigation to the Ellenville village police department, Ulster County District Attorney’s Special Victim’s Unit, the Ulster County Sheriff’s Office and the state police Forensic Investigation Unit.

Meritorious Police Service: Life Saving to New York state police Trooper Jessica Romero and Ulster County sheriff’s Deputy

A special recognition award will also be presented to Maryann DeGroodt of Kingston.
The Police Chiefs Association of Ulster County 2018 Awards Banquet will start at 5:30 p.m. with a cocktail hour at Novella’s, 2 Terwilliger Lane, New Paltz. The guest speaker will
be veteran and former U.S. Rep. Chris Gibson, R-Kinderhook.
Gibson joined the Army in 1986 and served two tours in the first Gulf War, rising to the rank of colonel. In 2010, he was elected to represent the 19th Congressional District, which comprises all of Columbia, Ulster, Delaware, Greene, Otsego, Schoharie and Sullivan counties, and parts of Broome, Dutchess, Montgomery and Rensselaer counties. He was re-elected in 2012 and 2014. In 2015, Gibson announced he would not seek re-election to a fourth term.
