Climate group hosts potluck dinner
The New Paltz Climate Smart group will launch during a community potluck event starting at 6:30 p.m. Friday, May 11, at the New Paltz Community Center, 3 Veterans Drive.
New Paltz Climate Smart is a community project and a collaboration between the town and village of New Paltz and the New Paltz Climate Action Coalition.
The potluck dinner is free and there will be a children’s activity table.
The Climate Smart Communities Program was established in New York in 2009 to provide local governments with guidance on how to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, save taxpayer dollars, and advance community goals for health and safety, economic vitality, energy independence, and quality of life.
Both the town and village of New Paltz adopted the Climate Smart Community Pledge and each has been designated a Climate Smart Community.
Public forum focuses on opioid addiction
The Opioid Prevention & Recovery Committee of Mountain Top Progressives will host a forum from 6 to 9:15 p.m. Wednesday, May 16, at the Windham Civic Center, 5379 Route 23.
The forum aims to educate the community about the need for, and availability of services, and bring the community together to address the issue of opioid addiction. The forum will allow local groups to network, learn, and affirm their commitment to community health. Attendees will also learn how to administer Narcan, the heroin overdose antidote.
The evening will start with a short film, followed by a panel discussion, a question-and-answer session, and Narcan training provided by the state Office of Alcohol and Substance Abuse Services.
The panel will include Beth Schuster, director of the Twin County Recovery Services, and Maggie Graham, director of Greene County Mental Health, among others.
