American wins Prague international marathon

Olympic bronze medalist Galen Rupp of the United States won the Prague international marathon on Sunday while Kenyan runner Bornes Jepkirui Kitur was the fastest woman in the race.

Rupp pulled ahead away from the favorite Sisay Lemma of Ethiopia with about four kilometers to go and finished the race in 2 hours, 6 minutes, 7 seconds. It was the second fastest time in the history of the race.

Lemma crossed the finish line in 2:07:02 while Kenya’s Stephen Kwelio Chemlany was third in 2:09:42.

Kitur won in 2:24:19 ahead of Belaynesh Oljira and Amane Gobena, both from Ethiopia.

Alexander Zverev defeated three-time former champion Philipp Kohlschreiber 6-3, 6-3 to defend his Munich Open title on Sunday.

Zverev, the world No. 3, hit four aces and converted four of his six break chances to win the final in 1 hour and 11 minutes.

Zverev says, “It was closer than the score indicates.”

It is the 21-year-old’s first title of the year and seventh altogether, boosting his confidence for upcoming tournaments in Madrid and Rome as well as the French Open.

The 34-year-old Kohlschreiber, who won here in 2007, 2012 and 2016, was playing in his sixth final at the clay-court tournament. It was the first all-German men’s singles final since Florian Mayer beat Zverev to win the Gerry Weber Open in 2016.

Man U’s plea after Ferguson’s brain surgery

A day after former manager Alex Ferguson underwent emergency surgery for a brain hemorrhage, Manchester United tweeted Sunday: “Please. Be strong. Win this one.”

Online posts from United provided no update on the condition of the 76-year-old Ferguson, who the club said Saturday required “a period of intensive care to optimize his recovery.”

Social media continued to be awash with tributes and get-well messages for Ferguson, who spent almost 27 years in charge before retiring in 2013 as the most successful manager in British football history.

“Manchester United would like to thank the wider football world for the messages of support following the news that Sir Alex Ferguson underwent emergency surgery on Saturday evening,” United posted on its Twitter account.
