Kingston coach out after 22 seasons
Two-time Freeman Coach of Year Kelder out after guiding Tigers to 289-159 record, four sectional titles in 22 seasons
Ron Kelder is out after coaching Kingston High’s boys basketball team for 22 seasons.
Kingston Director of Athletics Rich Silverstein confirmed Monday that he has informed the veteran varsity coach that his contract will not be renewed for the 2018-19 campaign.
Kelder, the Freeman’s 2000 and 2002 Coach of the Year, led the Tigers to a 16-6 record and a spot in the Section 9, Class AA semifinals this past season.
“Ron has done a wonderful job for our kids for so many years,” Silverstein said. “At this time, after I have done my observations and evaluations, I have recommended to the superintendent (Paul Padalino) that his contract not be renewed.
“I feel it’s time to move in a new direction. I’m very proud of the job Ron has done over the years,” added Silverstein, who said there were no outside influences. “This was solely my decision.”
Kelder, informed recently of the decision, declined to comment.
The Tigers were 289159 (.645) under Kelder, The team had just one losing season in the last 20 years and reached the sectional finals nine times. Kingston won consecutive championships in 2002-03-04.
It returned to the finals in 201213-14, winning it all in ’13.
Kelder would have been bidding
for his 300th career win next season with a team that expects to have eight players returning.
“My evaluation does not take into account wins or losses or
postseason successful. I evaluate the entire period, from the first day of practice on,” Silverstein said. “I’m always looking for an A++ candidate in every position.
“Looking at everything, my
recommendation to the superintendent was to have a new varsity basketball coach for the next school year.”
Silverstein said the interview process has begun with any applicants
from inside the Kingston City Schools District.
The plan is to have a coach named and approved by the School Board by the end of the school year.
