Driver of car killed in crash with school bus
Driver of car dies in head-on collision with school bus
The driver of a car died Monday morning after colliding head-on with a Red Hook school district bus on South Quaker Lane, according to Hyde Park police.
There were no serious injuries to the occupants of the bus — the driver, three high school students and one bus monitor, police said.
About 8 a.m., a 2002 Honda Civic was northbound on South Quaker Lane near Dana Place when it struck a southbound 2015 Ford school bus, police said.
The driver of the Honda was partially ejected and was pronounced dead at the scene by the Dutchess County medical examiner, according to a police press release. The identity of the driver was being withheld by police pending notification of relatives.
Red Hook school district Superintendent Paul Finch said the Honda crossed into the southbound lane and struck the bus, which was headed to Dutchess County BOCES on Salt Point Turnpike in Poughkeepsie.
All of the bus’s occupants were checked out at the scene, and the driver, the bus monitor and two of the three students were taken to the MidHudson Regional Hospital in Poughkeepsie for evaluation or treatment, Finch said.
Finch said the monitor suffered minor facial injuries that will require “some follow-up medical care.” The others were treated for “minor bumps and bruises” and released, the superintendent said. He declined to identify any of the bus’s occupants other than to say the driver was male and the monitor was female.
The accident was being investigated by Hyde Park police and the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office.
The Hyde Park Police Department, in its press release, expressed “special thanks” to a Dutchess Ambulette driver who stopped to aid victims of the crash before fire and rescue personnel arrived.
