HOUSE ABLAZE
An electrical fire tore through a Spencer Drive home and left it uninhabitable, the Red Hook Fire Department said Monday.
The home’s two residents and their dog got out safely.
The fire department said the 911 call reporting the blaze at 36 Spencer Drive in Upper Red Hook came in at 11:34 p.m. Sunday and that when firefighters arrived, flames and smoke were pouring out of the front of the house and the kitchen area.
A second alarm brought additional firefighters to the scene.
Part of the roof above the kitchen collapsed while firefighters were battling the blaze, forcing them into a defensive mode, Red Hook Assistant Fire Chief Shawn Ball said in a press release. Still, they were able to bring the fire under control in about 30 minutes, although operations at the scene continued until almost 5:30 a.m., the press release stated.
Nobody was injured in the fire, though one resident and one firefighter were taken to Northern Dutchess Hospital in Rhinebeck for evaluation. The resident, who was sitting in his vehicle when firefighters arrived, was helped from the property by the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office before being transferred to an ambulance.
The homeowners have made arrangements to stay with family members, the fire department said.
The Dutchess County Fire Investigation Division determined early Monday morning that the fire was accidental and began in the front porch area of the home, according to the fire department.
