TheaterSounds presents reading on May 18

WHAT: Staged reading WHEN: May 18 at 7:30 p.m.

WHERE: Unitarian Universalist Congregation of the Catskills, 320 Sawkill Road, town of Ulster

DETAILS: TheaterSounds’ next offering will be a staged reading of “The Owl and The Pussycat,” a two-character comedy by Bill Manhoff. Alan Alda and Diana Sands brought these roles to Broadway. George Segal and Barbra Streisand did them on film. Felix, a clerk in a bookstore and an aspiring but unpublished writer, watches a prostitute named Doris plying her trade outside his window. He complains to the landlord and has her evicted. Insisting she is not a prostitute but an aspiring “model and actress,” Doris pounds on his door, claiming he owes her a bed for the night. The comedy is based on the characters’ deluding themselves by believing they are something they are not. They can see each other’s weaknesses and self-delusion, but not their own. Only when they discover and accept the truth about themselves can they begin to find happiness with each other. Susannah Melone plays Doris, with Jonathan Van Gieson as Felix. Admission is a suggested donation of $5 or more.
