Joe Ferrer pitched a three-hit shutout and Fritz Genther hit a solo homer, carrying Kingston High’s baseball team to its eighth straight victory Tuesday, 1-0 over Monroe-Woodbury.

Genther, who had two hits in the game, smacked a 1-0 pitch to right center in the first inning to put Kingston on the board.

Ferrer struck out eight and ran into trouble only once in the game. The Crusaders had runners on the corners with none out in the second, but the junior escaped the jam with a strikeout, popup and another strikeout.

“Joe was outstanding for us today and we needed exactly what he gave us as we only had three hits ourselves,” Kingston coach Mike Groppuso said. “He was able to establish his strike zone early and hit his spots.”

Connor Olson took the loss. Tyler Guadagno had two of the hits off Ferrer: a single and double.

The Tigers’ defense backed Ferrer, turning 6-4-3 double plays in both the third and sixth innings.

“Today was about pitching and defense,” Groppuso said. “Something we have continuously worked hard at, so to make it happen in a crucial game like this was a big step in preparing ourselves for the next step.”

Kingston, once 2-5 and in danger of not making the postseason, is now 10-5 overall and 6-5 in the Orange County Interscholastic Association’s Division I. The Tigers complete the three-game divisional series with Monroe 4:30 p.m. today at Gruner Field.
