Kingston’s offense erupts in victory over Pine Bush
Home runs by Kaitlynn Schrowang and Jessica Chilcott and a lengthy sixth inning highlighted Kingston High’s 20-0 softball triumph over Pine Bush on Wednesday.
The Tigers pounded out 19 hits in the win. The benefactor was junior Victoria DeMercurio, who got her first varsity victory and a shutout to boot. She pitched a fourhitter with four strikeouts and one walk. The game was stopped after six innings by the mercy rule.
Kingston scored a run in the first inning and three more in the second of the Orange County Interscholastic Athletic Association Division I contest. It became 8-0 on Schrowang’s grand slam in the fourth.
The game was blown open in the sixth when Kingston
scored 12 runs on 11 hits. The Tigers sent 16 batters to the plate, including Chilcott, who hit a two-run homer.
“We were hitting the ball and they weren’t able to make the outs,” Kingston coach Trishann Hayes said. “Out of respect, I had a couple of players step off the bag early.”
Schrowang finished with five RBI. Chilcott, who also singled, drove in three runs. Shannon Bonewit had a big game, going 5-for-5 (all singles) with two RBI and three runs scored.
Kailyn Lukaszewski had a double and three RBI, Sydney Bonewit singled, doubled and had two RBI, and Alyssa Finno and Megan Peace had a pair of singles and two RBI for the Tigers. Also for Kingston, Alyssa Villielm had a double and single, and Grace Tremper and Lauren Shambo each drove in a run.
“It was nice to get the bats going,” Hayes said. “It was definitely muchneeded. Victoria pitched a good game with really good defense behind her.”
Kingston, 8-3 overall and 3-1 in the division after the win, plays Saturday at noon in a non-league game at Ichabod Crane.
