Cellist Kalayjian back for Pro Musica concert
Cellist Ani Kalayjian returns to the Saugerties Pro Musica stage with a new trio for a concert on Sunday, May 20, at 3 p.m. at Saugerties United Methodist Church, 67 Washington Ave., Saugerties.
Kalayjian will be joined by violinist David Lisker and pianist David Fung. She won rave reviews and standing ovations from audience in her previous local performances. The trio will be performing a program that includes Beethoven’s “Op. 1 No. 1 Trio,” Piazzolla’s “Seasons of Oblivion” and Brahms’ “B Major Trio.”
Hailed by The Los Angeles Times as “representing the young, up-andcoming generation,” and a cellist with “notable conviction and skill,” by San Diego Arts, Kalayjian enjoys an exciting career that has taken her all over the world, both as a soloist and chamber musician. Her competition successes includes winning the Anglo-Czechoslovak Trust competition in England as a soloist. It was also in England taht she was also granted the Bohuslav Martinu Foundation Prize, as well as a top prize at the J.C. Arriaga chamber music competition with Sima Trio.
Born in Russia, Lisker immigrated to the United States with his parents when he was 4 years old and began studying violin at the age of 5 with his father. He continued his studies with Terrine Gomez in Champagne, Illinois, Linda Rose in Los Angeles and Mark Zinger in Chicago. He went on to earn his bachelor of music degree from the Manhattan School of Music in New York and his master of music degree from the Juilliard School, where he studied with Itzhak Perlman.
Described as an “exquisite virtuoso violinist” (Chicago Sun-Times) whose “playing possesses a deeply profound musical instinct” (The Classical Network) and a “cultivated artistic taste” (Kulturas Diena, Latvia), Lisker has appeared in many of today’s most prestigious concert halls, including New York’s Carnegie Hall, Avery Fisher Hall, Alice Tully Hall, The Mann Auditorium in Israel, The Orange County Performing Arts Center in California and The Shanghai Theatre in China.
Praised for his “superstar qualities” by Le Libre, Fung has performed with the major orchestras of the United States, Europe, Asia and Australia, appearing at the world’s foremost festivals and concert venues with repertoire spanning from Mozart to Tan Dun. Described as “stylish and articulate” in The New York Times, Fung is widely recognized for performances that are elegant and refined, yet intensely poetic and uncommonly expressive.
Admission is $15 for adults and $12 for seniors. Students are admitted free.
